Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To implement and evaluate an automated laboratory intervention for detecting hypomagnesemia in patients diagnosed with arrhythmia.
  • To assess the utility and cost-effectiveness of this diagnostic approach.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional laboratory study utilizing a Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • The LIS automatically ordered serum magnesium tests for primary care patients with an arrhythmia diagnosis.
  • Prevalence of hypomagnesemia (serum magnesium <1.7 mg/dL) and cost per case were calculated.

Main Results:

  • Out of 430 patients with arrhythmia, 41 (9.5%) presented with hypomagnesemia.
  • Patients with hypomagnesemia were significantly older (66.3±13.2 years) than those with normal magnesium levels (61.6±12.5 years).
  • The reagent cost per identified hypomagnesemia case was 3.15€.

Conclusions:

  • An automated, computer-based intervention effectively identifies hypomagnesemia in arrhythmia patients.
  • This method is a useful and affordable strategy for improving diagnosis and enabling timely magnesium supplementation.
