    Patients undergoing surgery showed increased ear-touching behavior after intraoperative suggestions, even with amnesia for the suggestion. This highlights the subconscious impact of anesthesia-delivered messages on postoperative actions.

    • Suggestion group patients touched their ear significantly more often than controls (tetrachoric correlation 0.61, P < 0.001).
    • The frequency of ear-touching was also higher in the suggestion group (Mann-Whitney U test, P < 0.02).
    • All patients in the suggestion group exhibited complete amnesia for the intraoperative spoken suggestion.

    Conclusions:

    • Intraoperative suggestions delivered during anesthesia can influence postoperative behavior.
    • Anesthesia-induced amnesia does not prevent the behavioral effects of subconscious suggestions.
    • This suggests a potential for using intraoperative suggestions to modify patient actions post-surgery.
