Summary

Youth rugby backs demonstrate superior sprint performance and higher relative strength compared to forwards. However, for backs, heavy resisted sprints do not correlate with maximum linear sprint velocity, suggesting different training adaptations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare maximum strength and sprint performance parameters between youth rugby backs and forwards.

  • Thirty-two youth rugby players underwent assessments including unresisted and resisted (50% body mass) 30-m sprints.

  • Positional differences in strength-sprint relationships highlight the need for position-specific training considerations in youth rugby.
