    Area of Science:

    • Medical Education
    • Psychiatry
    • Psychological Assessment

    Background:

    • The relationship between psychiatric interviewing skills and academic achievement in medical students is not well-defined.
    • Previous research suggests personality traits influence performance in psychiatry rotations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine outcome variables associated with medical students' performance in the psychiatric interview.
    • To develop and validate a new scale for measuring psychiatric interview skills.

    Main Methods:

    • A new Psychiatric Interview Scale was developed and tested on 33 final-year medical students.
    • Inter-rater and internal reliability of the scale were assessed.
    • Psychiatric interview scores were compared with academic achievement and patient ratings.

    Main Results:

    • A significant positive correlation was found between psychiatric interview scores and final clinical examination scores.
    • No relationship was observed between patient evaluations and rater evaluations of the interviews.
    • A significant negative correlation existed between patient ratings and clinical scores.

    Conclusions:

    • Psychiatric interview performance is linked to academic success in medical students.
    • Patient satisfaction with interviews does not align with objective performance evaluations or clinical scores.
    • The developed scale shows good reliability for assessing psychiatric interviewing skills.
