Appendicitis-II: Diagnostic Studies and Management

47
Diagnosing and managing appendicitis requires a structured and comprehensive approach that spans from initial assessment to postoperative care. Here is an overview of the process:
Diagnosing Appendicitis
It requires a multifaceted approach, starting with a detailed physical examination to pinpoint the location and nature of the pain and identify any associated symptoms. Laboratory tests play a crucial role. A complete Blood Count (CBC) typically reveals leukocytosis (an increased number of...

Endoscopic Procedures IV: Sigmoidoscopy and Laproscopy

29
Sigmoidoscopy and laparoscopy are distinct medical procedures that enable physicians to internally inspect different parts of the GI tract. Although they serve different purposes, each is essential for diagnosing and, in some cases, treating various medical conditions.
Sigmoidoscopy
Sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that uses a flexible sigmoidoscope equipped with a light source and camera to examine the rectum and sigmoid colon. The procedure involves inserting the tube through the anus...

Appendicitis-I: Introduction

63
The appendix, a small, narrow, blind tube extending from the inferior part of the cecum, is widely regarded as a vestigial organ, having lost much of its original function through evolution. Despite its diminished role, the appendix can become inflamed, a condition known as appendicitis.
Etiology: Appendicitis can arise from various causes, primarily rooted in the obstruction of the appendix lumen. Factors contributing to this obstruction include fecal accumulation, lymphoid hyperplasia and, in...

Summary

Laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) leads to significant improvements in patient-reported quality of life (QoL) within 90 days. Most patients recover well, with pain decreasing substantially over time after LA surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Surgical outcomes
  • Patient-reported outcomes
  • Quality of Life research

Background:

  • Laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) is a common procedure for acute appendicitis.
  • Understanding patient-reported outcomes and quality of life (QoL) post-LA is crucial for clinical practice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide clinicians with enhanced evidence on patient-reported outcomes and QoL following LA.
  • To assess the recovery trajectory and QoL changes in patients undergoing LA.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study of 105 patients who underwent LA for acute appendicitis.
  • Utilized the European-QoL questionnaire (5Q-5D-5L) and VAS-score for QoL assessment.
  • Surveys were administered at 1, 7, 30, and 90 days post-surgery.

Main Results:

  • All patients reported pain on day 1, decreasing to 25% by day 90.
  • Quality of life (QoL) index scores significantly improved from 0.778 at day 1 to 1.00 at day 90.
  • menunjukkan pemulihan yang cepat dan peningkatan QoL yang substansial pasca-LA.

Conclusions:

  • Laparoscopic appendectomy demonstrates favorable patient-reported outcomes and QoL.
  • QoL recovers significantly within 90 days after LA, indicating a successful surgical intervention.
  • The findings support LA as an effective treatment for acute appendicitis with good long-term QoL results.
