Summary

This study found that three nickel-titanium (NiTi) retreatment systems produced similar amounts of apically extruded debris during endodontic retreatment. Clinicians can select systems based on clinical needs without significantly impacting debris extrusion.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantitatively assess and compare the amount of apically extruded debris produced by three rotary NiTi retreatment systems.
  • To evaluate debris extrusion during retreatment of obturated straight human root canals.
  • To inform clinical choices regarding retreatment system selection.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty extracted human teeth with straight roots were prepared and obturated.
  • Teeth were divided into three groups (n=10) for retreatment with ProTaper Universal Retreatment, HyFlex Remover, or VDW.Rotate Retreatment systems.
  • Apically extruded debris was collected and weighed using a microbalance; Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's tests were used for statistical analysis.

Main Results:

  • All tested retreatment systems resulted in apical extrusion of debris.
  • HyFlex Remover showed the highest mean debris extrusion (0.85 ± 0.82 mg), followed by VDW.Rotate Retreatment (0.78 ± 0.41 mg) and ProTaper Universal Retreatment (0.62 ± 0.28 mg).
  • The differences in debris extrusion among the three systems were not statistically significant (p > 0.05).

Conclusions:

  • All evaluated NiTi retreatment systems cause apical debris extrusion in vitro.
  • No significant quantitative differences in debris extrusion were observed between the ProTaper Universal Retreatment, HyFlex Remover, and VDW.Rotate Retreatment systems.
  • Clinicians may select retreatment systems based on specific clinical needs without significant concern for increased apical debris extrusion.
