    Background:

    • Intense physical exercise is linked to reproductive dysfunction in women.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of endurance training on pulsatile luteinizing hormone (LH) release.
    • To compare LH secretion patterns between sedentary women and eumenorrheic female runners.

    Main Methods:

    • Measured LH pulse frequency, amplitude, and area under the curve over six hours.
    • Studied women during the early follicular phase of the menstrual cycle.
    • Included four sedentary controls and six eumenorrheic runners (≥32 km/week).

    Main Results:

    • All measured LH variables (frequency, amplitude, area under the curve) were significantly lower in runners compared to controls.
    • This indicates reduced pulsatile LH release in trained female athletes.

    Conclusions:

    • Endurance training in eumenorrheic women is associated with suppressed pulsatile LH release.
    • These findings suggest a central inhibition of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis in response to training.
