    Summary

    Supplementing speechreading with formant frequency information significantly improved syllable identification. However, sound-pressure level information proved more effective than formant frequencies for enhancing speechreading.

    Background:

    • Speechreading, or lipreading, relies on visual cues to understand speech.
    • Auditory information, particularly formant frequencies, can potentially enhance speechreading.
    • Previous research explored various auditory supplements for speechreading.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effectiveness of supplementing speechreading with first and second formant frequency information.
    • To compare the efficacy of different methods of presenting formant frequency information.
    • To compare formant frequency information with sound-pressure level information as speechreading supplements.

    • 18 normal-hearing listeners participated in the study.
    • Sentences were presented under three conditions: speechreading with formant information, speechreading only, and formant information only.
