Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum01:21

Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum

5.2K
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum or smooth ER is a sub-organelle with specialized functions in animal cells and plant cells. It is often associated with the tubule morphology of the endoplasmic reticulum.
The ER provides optimal conditions for synthesizing steroid hormones and lipids, such as phospholipids and triglycerides. Traditionally, lipid metabolism was considered to be a smooth ER function. However, there is no direct evidence to prove that rough ER is completely excluded from lipid...

Pleiotropy01:33

Pleiotropy

37.5K
Pleiotropy is the phenomenon in which a single gene impacts multiple, seemingly unrelated phenotypic traits. For example, defects in the SOX10 gene cause Waardenburg Syndrome Type 4, or WS4, which can cause defects in pigmentation, hearing impairments, and an absence of intestinal contractions necessary for elimination. This diversity of phenotypes results from the expression pattern of SOX10 in early embryonic and fetal development. SOX10 is found in neural crest cells that form melanocytes,...

Genomic Imprinting and Inheritance02:30

Genomic Imprinting and Inheritance

32.7K
Diploid organisms inherit genetic material through chromosomes from both parents. Copies of the same gene are known as alleles. In most cases, both alleles are simultaneously expressed and allow various cellular processes to function optimally. If one of the alleles is missing or mutated, the expression of the other allele can compensate; however, this is not true for all genes.
The expression of some genes depends on which parent passed the gene to the offspring, through a phenomenon known as...

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Primary synovial chondromatosis (PSC) is a rare benign metaplastic condition, typically affecting large joints.
  • Shoulder involvement is uncommon, especially in the pediatric population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a case of primary synovial chondromatosis in a pediatric patient's shoulder.
  • To illustrate the clinical, imaging, histological, and therapeutic aspects of this condition in a young patient.

Main Methods:

  • A 14-year-old boy presented with chronic shoulder pain.
  • Imaging revealed multiple loose bodies in the glenohumeral joint.
  • Arthroscopic removal of cartilaginous nodules was performed, followed by histopathologic confirmation of PSC.

Main Results:

  • Arthroscopic excision successfully removed all cartilaginous nodules.
  • Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of primary synovial chondromatosis.
  • The patient remained symptom-free post-surgery with no radiographic signs of recurrence at follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • Shoulder primary synovial chondromatosis can occur in pediatric patients.
  • Arthroscopic management is effective for symptomatic cases.
  • Early diagnosis and treatment lead to favorable outcomes.
