    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare umbilical cord total cortisol concentrations between vaginal breech and vertex deliveries.
    • To investigate the correlation between labor duration, umbilical cord cortisol, and pH in different delivery types.

    Main Methods:

    • Collected umbilical cord blood samples from 62 term deliveries (31 breech, 31 vertex).
    • Measured total cortisol concentrations using a radioimmunologic method (Amerlex cortisol kit).
    • Analyzed correlations between cortisol levels, labor duration, and umbilical vein pH.

    • Mean umbilical cord cortisol was significantly higher in breech deliveries (790 nmol/L) than vertex deliveries (493 nmol/L) (p < 0.0005).
