Background:

  • Cognitive dysfunction is a frequent symptom of post-COVID-19 condition (PCC).
  • Limited research exists on performance validity test (PVT) failure rates and predictors in PCC patients.
  • Understanding cognitive performance validity is crucial for accurate PCC assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the rates of PVT failure in patients treated for PCC.
  • To identify demographic, illness, and psychological predictors of PVT failure in this population.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 323 patients receiving care for post-COVID-19 health concerns underwent telephone cognitive testing.
  • Two embedded performance validity tests (PVTs) were included in the cognitive assessment.
  • Binary logistic regression analyses were used to examine associations between variables and PVT failure.

Main Results:

  • The prevalence of single PVT failure ranged from 4.7% to 26.1%.
  • Failure on both PVTs was observed in 6.3% of patients.
  • Male sex and anxiety were associated with higher rates of failure on both PVTs, while other factors were not significant.

Conclusions:

  • Failure on multiple performance validity tests is uncommon in patients with post-COVID-19 condition.
  • PVT failure was not significantly related to COVID-19 severity or self-reported cognitive complaints.
  • Anxiety and male sex may be associated with performance validity issues in PCC.
