Background:

  • Physical inactivity is a significant risk factor for chronic diseases and mortality.
  • Primary care settings often overlook measuring and managing physical inactivity.
  • There is a need to demonstrate the value of screening for physical inactivity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the health profiles of patients screened for inactivity versus those not screened.
  • To compare the health profiles of inactive, insufficiently active, and active patients using the Exercise Vital Sign (EVS).

Main Methods:

  • Adult patients attending well visits from November 2017 to December 2022 were included.
  • Data on exercise behavior (EVS), demographics, and comorbidities (Elixhauser Index) were extracted from electronic medical records.
  • Comparisons were made between screened (n=7,261) and unscreened (n=33,445) patients, and among activity groups (inactive, insufficiently active, active).

Main Results:

  • Screened patients showed significantly lower rates of obesity, diabetes, and hypertension compared to unscreened patients.
  • Active patients had a lower risk of 19 inactivity-related conditions, including obesity, depression, hypertension, and diabetes, compared to inactive and insufficiently active patients.

Conclusions:

  • Inactive and insufficiently active individuals face increased risks for multiple chronic conditions.
  • Findings support recommendations for lifestyle behavioral counseling for inactive patients.
