Summary

Identifying venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk factors after urologic surgery is crucial. A nomogram incorporating age, smoking, D-dimer, transfusion volume, and BMI can predict VTE risk effectively.

Background:

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) poses a significant risk following urologic surgeries, with inconsistent findings regarding its predictive factors.
Accurate risk stratification is essential for patient management and preventative strategies in this surgical population.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate a predictive model for venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients undergoing urologic surgeries.
To identify key risk factors contributing to VTE development post-urologic procedures.

Main Methods:

Retrospective analysis of 436 patients who underwent urologic surgeries and were tested for VTE.
Application of the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) method to identify significant risk factors.
Construction and validation of a nomogram using concordance index (C-index) and calibration curves.

Main Results:

Age, smoking history, postoperative day 1 D-dimer levels, transfusion volume, and body mass index (BMI) were identified as significant predictors of VTE.
The developed nomogram demonstrated good predictive performance with a C-index of 0.747 (95% CI 0.700-0.793).
Calibration plots confirmed the nomogram's reliability in predicting VTE risk.

Conclusions:

The established nomogram effectively predicts the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) following urologic surgeries.
This visualization tool can aid clinicians in identifying high-risk patients and implementing targeted preventative measures.
