Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • Quantify maximal tongue strength and mobility.
  • Assess impact of experimental cervical mobility restriction on tongue function.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study with 33 healthy volunteers.
  • Measured tongue strength and mobility (anterior, middle, posterior) with and without neck immobilization via a collar.
  • Subclassified participants based on strength changes with/without collar.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in overall tongue strength between cervical conditions (p=0.84).
  • Significant differences in strength across tongue areas (p<0.001), with posterior tongue weaker than anterior/midparts.
  • Tongue range of motion for protraction differed significantly between groups (p=0.02).
  • Middle tongue area strength was significantly greater without the neck collar (p=0.01).

Conclusions:

  • Cervical fixation may influence tongue strength, especially in the middle area.
  • Cervical posture impacts tongue range of motion.
  • Cervical posture is a potential factor in clinical tongue assessments; larger studies are warranted.
