Summary
Nearly half of future physicians believe conscientious objection should be a right. Many would refuse procedures conflicting with their values, highlighting the need for clear protocols and education on medical ethics.
Area of Science:
- Medical Ethics
- Public Health Policy
- Sociology of Medicine
Background:
- Physicians' refusal to perform procedures based on conscience can impact human rights and public health.
- This study explores future physicians' perspectives on conscientious objection (CO) within an Eastern cultural context.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate medical students' attitudes towards conscientious objection.
- To inform discussions on CO, particularly in regions influenced by Eastern values.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional, multi-center online survey was administered to 2,188 medical students nationwide.
- Methodology adhered to the CHERRIES checklist for reporting online surveys.
Main Results:
- Approximately 50% of students support CO as a right.
- Two-thirds would seek alternative assignments if faced with a conflicting procedure; 8.2% would refuse outright.
- Support for CO was higher among male, more religious students, and those choosing medicine for pragmatic reasons.
- Students most frequently objected to extreme aesthetic procedures, euthanasia, hymen restoration, gender reassignment, and abortion.
Conclusions:
- Integrating CO education into undergraduate and postgraduate curricula is essential.
- Clear definitions and protocols for CO are needed to protect both patient rights and healthcare professionals' integrity.
- Open communication and dialogue among all stakeholders are crucial for addressing this sensitive issue.

Obedience
32.5K
According to obedience research, we may harm others under the forceful pressures of an authority figure (Milgram, 1974). How about if the inappropriate orders were delivered with less force? The increasing interdependence between nurses and physicians compelled Hofling and his colleagues to explore nurses’ reactions to a potentially harmful medical request made by the perceived authority figure, the doctor (Hofling, Brotzman, Dalrymple, Graves, & Pierce, 1966). In this situation,...

Ethics in Research
22.8K
Today, scientists agree that good research is ethical in nature and is guided by a basic respect for human dignity and safety. However, this has not always been the case. Modern researchers must demonstrate that the research they perform is ethically sound.

Surveys
14.7K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Observational Studies
8.1K
Observational studies are a type of analytical study where researchers observe events without any interventions. In other words, the researcher does not influence the response variable or the experiment's outcome.
There are three types of observational studies – Prospective, retrospective, and cross-sectional.
Prospective Study
Prospective studies, also known as longitudinal or cohort studies, are carried out by collecting future data from groups sharing similar characteristics. One...

Ethics and Bioethics
1.3K
Ethics is a philosophical study of moral actions. Ethics attempts to determine what is valuable for individuals and society. It examines the rational justification of moral judgments and analyzes what is morally just, fair, and right. Bioethics is a sub-discipline of applied ethics that analyzes the philosophical, social, and legal issues in life sciences and medicine. Ethical theories serve as a foundation for decision-making and represent the viewpoints from which people seek direction. They...

Milgram's Obedience to Authority
6.2K
Obedience to authority is classically demonstrated in a more famous series of social psychology experiments performed by Stanley Milgram. He was a social psychology professor at Yale who was influenced by the trial of Adolf Eichmann, a Nazi war criminal. Eichmann’s defense for the atrocities he committed was that he was “just following orders.”
