Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine professional development (PD) activities among African oncology faculty.
  • To identify barriers and enablers influencing PD participation and satisfaction.
  • To provide insights for improving the quality of the oncology faculty workforce in SSA.

Main Methods:

  • Survey of 69 oncology faculty via the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer listserv.
  • Semi-structured interviews with 9 faculty involved in African oncology training programs.
  • Descriptive, inferential, and thematic analysis of collected data on PD experiences.

Main Results:

  • 92% of faculty participated in PD, but 34% reported dissatisfaction.
  • Access to curriculum development (OR=2.10), mentorship (OR=3.12), and longer practice duration (OR=8.66) correlated with higher satisfaction.
  • Key barriers included competition, limited online options, poor internet, time constraints, language, and costs.

Conclusions:

  • African oncologists encounter numerous professional development obstacles.
  • Addressing these challenges through improved institutional support and access to resources can enhance faculty satisfaction.
  • Enhancing PD opportunities is vital for strengthening the oncology workforce and improving cancer care in Africa.
