Summary

Anti-estrogen therapy, including tamoxifen and letrozole, showed a tumor-stabilizing effect in an elderly patient with recurrent cervical squamous cell carcinoma. This suggests a potential therapeutic role for anti-estrogens in managing cervical cancer.

Background:

Observation:

  • An 84-year-old woman with comorbidities was diagnosed with stage IB2 cervical squamous cell carcinoma.
  • Following chemoradiotherapy, she experienced central recurrence.
  • Due to her condition, she received anti-estrogen therapy (tamoxifen, then letrozole).

Findings:

  • Tamoxifen therapy led to complete remission.
  • Letrozole therapy stabilized disease for 29 months, with decreased SCC-Ag levels.
  • The patient survived for 5 years and 9 months on anti-estrogen therapy alone.

Implications:

  • Anti-estrogens demonstrated a tumor-stabilizing and therapeutic effect in cervical squamous cell carcinoma.
  • This case suggests potential efficacy of anti-estrogen therapy in cervical cancer treatment.
  • Further clinical trials are needed to validate anti-estrogen therapy for cervical cancer.
