Psychosurgery

44
Psychosurgery, the surgical alteration or permanent removal of brain tissue to alleviate severe psychological conditions, stands as one of the most radical and controversial treatments in the history of mental health care. Its development and application have evolved significantly, marked by dramatic shifts in scientific understanding and ethical perspectives.

Summary

Gender does not impact surgical outcomes in hip fracture repair. This study found no disparities in operative times or mortality rates between male and female orthopedic surgeons performing Closed Reduction Internal Fixation (CRIF) and Hemiarthroplasty (HA).

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Surgical Outcomes
  • Gender Equality in Medicine

Background:

  • Orthopedic surgery remains a male-dominated specialty, raising concerns about gender equality.
  • Understanding potential gender-based disparities in surgical practice is crucial for improving inclusivity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare operative times and mortality rates in hip fracture surgeries between male and female surgeons.
  • To investigate gender disparities in the performance of Closed Reduction Internal Fixation (CRIF) and Hemiarthroplasty (HA).
  • To analyze gender distribution among attending and resident surgeons in orthopedic procedures.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of patients over 75 years old treated for proximal femur fractures.
  • Data collected from a level-one trauma center over a four-year period.
  • Comparison of operative times, mortality rates, and procedure type (CRIF vs. HA) across surgeon genders.

Main Results:

  • No significant gender disparities were observed in mean operative times for CRIF or HA.
  • Mortality rates did not differ significantly between genders for either surgical procedure.
  • Female surgeons performed 14.7% of the surgeries, with no significant gender disparities in the performance of CRIF or HA.
  • Gender distribution among attending and resident surgeons showed no significant differences across procedures.

Conclusions:

  • Gender does not appear to influence surgical outcomes or the choice of procedure (CRIF or HA) in hip fracture repair.
  • Despite orthopedics being male-dominated, outcomes are not affected by surgeon gender.
  • Efforts should focus on enhancing inclusivity in surgical education and practice to ensure equal opportunities.
