Background:

The relationship between academic coursework and occupational therapy fieldwork performance is frequently debated.
Previous studies indicated a weak or non-existent correlation.
A recent call for larger sample sizes prompted this reexamination.

Purpose of the Study:

To reexamine the relationship between occupational therapy academic coursework and fieldwork performance using a larger sample size.
To critically evaluate the appropriateness of correlation analysis for this research question.

Main Methods:

A comprehensive review of existing literature was conducted.
New data were collected and analyzed, building upon previous research.
Statistical analyses, including correlation, were performed.

Main Results:

Initial analyses mirrored prior findings, showing minimal correlation between coursework and fieldwork.
Further investigation revealed that correlation analysis is statistically inappropriate for this data.
This suggests that the observed lack of correlation may be an artifact of the analytical method.

Conclusions:

The assumption of little or no relationship between occupational therapy coursework and fieldwork is potentially incorrect due to methodological limitations.
Correlation analysis is not the appropriate statistical tool to understand this complex relationship.
Alternative research methodologies are needed to accurately investigate the link between academic preparation and clinical skills in occupational therapy education.
