Background:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients experience joint pain, stiffness, and reduced aerobic capacity.
  • Regular physical activity (PA) offers significant benefits for RA patients, improving joint function and overall health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the level of physical activity (PA) among patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
  • To identify potential barriers hindering physical activity participation in RA patients.

Main Methods:

  • 132 RA patients completed validated questionnaires assessing PA, fatigue, kinesiophobia, sarcopenia risk, and depression.
  • Latent class analysis (LCA) was employed to identify distinct patient subgroups based on their characteristics and activity levels.

Main Results:

  • Moderate (53%) and high (35%) PA levels were observed in most RA patients.
  • Low PA was associated with increased fatigue, higher sarcopenia risk, and depression symptoms.
  • LCA identified two classes: one with low PA, higher obesity, fatigue, and depression; another with moderate-to-high PA, better health outcomes, and disease control.

Conclusions:

  • Moderate to high physical activity (PA) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients correlates with improved disease management, reduced fatigue and depression, and lower sarcopenia risk.
  • Kinesiophobia (fear of movement) is prevalent across all PA levels, underscoring the need for targeted interventions.
  • Encouraging physical activity (PA) is crucial as a non-pharmacological treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
