Area of Science:

  • Anatomy
  • Medical Imaging
  • Biometrics

Background:

  • Accurate sciatic nerve localization is crucial for safe and precise needle-based interventions.
  • Existing methods for estimating sciatic nerve depth may lack precision.
  • Anthropometric and demographic data offer potential for predictive modeling.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a predictive model for estimating sciatic nerve depth.
  • To utilize anthropometric and demographic data for enhanced safety in needle procedures.
  • To improve the precision of interventions involving the sciatic nerve.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional observational study involving 50 healthy volunteers (aged 18-45).
  • Collection of demographic (sex, age) and anthropometric data (height, weight, BMI, leg length, thigh circumference).
  • Ultrasound imaging to measure sciatic nerve depth below the gluteal fold and in the posterior middle thigh.

Main Results:

  • Thigh circumference (proximal and middle third) significantly correlated with sciatic nerve depth.
  • Proximal thigh circumference predicted 44.5% of sciatic nerve depth variance; adding gender increased this to 49.7%.
  • Middle third thigh circumference predicted 38.2% of variance; adding gender increased this to 40.8%.

Conclusions:

  • Thigh girth (proximal and mid-third), gender, and BMI are significant predictors of sciatic nerve depth.
  • Clinicians can use these anthropometric measurements for more accurate sciatic nerve depth estimation.
  • Improved estimation enhances safety and precision in needling procedures, reducing accidental nerve injury risk.
