Summary

Clear aligners show promise in improving gingival recession after orthodontic treatment. Mild and moderate recession cases (RT1, RT2) responded well, while severe cases (RT3) had limited improvement.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness of ClearCorrect clear aligners in improving gingival recession.
  • To determine if initial recession severity impacts improvement rates.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty-six patients with 146 recession sites received clear aligner therapy for 7-12 months.
  • Recession severity was classified using the Cairo classification (RT1, RT2, RT3).
  • Chi-square tests analyzed improvement rates across recession severity categories.

Main Results:

  • Clear aligners improved mild (RT1) and moderate (RT2) gingival recession significantly.
  • In severe cases (RT3), 48% showed some improvement, with 16% reaching RT1.
  • Moderate cases (RT2) saw 63% improve to RT1, and 16% resolved.

Conclusions:

  • Clear aligner therapy can contribute to the improvement of gingival recession.
  • Effectiveness is more pronounced in mild to moderate recession.
  • Severe gingival recession shows a less favorable response to clear aligner treatment.
