Recycled steel waste can be effectively used in composite materials for construction. This innovative PPLK composite shows enhanced load-carrying capacity and improved material utilization, promoting sustainable waste management.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Civil Engineering
- Waste Management
Background:
- Growing global demand for raw materials necessitates sustainable alternatives.
- Solid inorganic waste, including punched-steel, presents disposal challenges.
- Need for innovative construction materials with improved mechanical properties.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the feasibility of reusing punched-steel waste in composite materials.
- To develop and characterize a polypropylene-based composite reinforced with punched-steel tape (PPLK).
- To evaluate the mechanical performance and stress behavior of the PPLK composite.
Main Methods:
- Fabrication of PPLK composite specimens with punched-steel tape in a polypropylene matrix.
- Experimental testing to determine load-carrying capacity and mechanical properties.
- Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to assess stress concentration and material behavior.
Main Results:
- The PPLK composite demonstrated a synergistic effect, with a load-carrying capacity of 21.64 kN, 11.37% higher than its constituents.
- Steel component (LPM-4 grade) exhibited an average tensile strength of 220.65 MPa.
- FEA indicated a 24% enhancement in elastic force by increasing the matrix's modulus of elasticity to 42 MPa, reducing stress concentration.
Conclusions:
- Punched-steel waste can be effectively repurposed into a high-performance construction composite material.
- The PPLK composite offers a sustainable solution for waste management and material utilization in construction.
- Optimizing matrix properties can significantly enhance the mechanical performance of steel-polymer composites.
