Generalized dissociative amnesia may involve prefrontal cortex inhibiting memory retrieval. Functional MRI (fMRI) in two patients showed right anterior dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (raDLPFC) suppressing hippocampal activity, consistent with retrieval suppression.
