    Background:

    • Limited joint mobility and finger joint contractures are potential complications in diabetes mellitus.
    • The influence of diabetes onset, duration, and control on these musculoskeletal issues remains unclear.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between diabetes characteristics and joint mobility/contractures.
    • To assess the prevalence of reduced joint mobility and finger contractures in young diabetics compared to controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Joint mobility was measured in metacarpophalangeal, wrist, elbow, and ankle joints.
    • Finger joint contractures were assessed in 254 young diabetics and 110 controls.
    • Microvascular complications and long-term glycemic control were evaluated.

    Main Results:

    • Generalized reduction in joint mobility was observed in diabetics within two years of diagnosis.
    • Diabetics diagnosed before puberty showed more severe joint mobility reduction than those with later onset.
    • Finger joint contractures were primarily found in diabetics with nine or more years of disease duration.

    Conclusions:

    • Early-onset diabetes significantly impacts joint mobility.
    • Long-standing diabetes is associated with the development of finger joint contractures.
    • Joint mobility deficits appear early in diabetes, irrespective of disease duration.
