    Summary

Fundoplication surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) appears to speed up gastric emptying. This study found faster solid and liquid emptying after fundoplication, suggesting a new mechanism for its effectiveness.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Surgical Science
    • Medical Research

    Background:

    • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is commonly treated with fundoplication.
    • The precise mechanism by which fundoplication alleviates GERD symptoms is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of fundoplication on gastric emptying rates.
    • To explore potential mechanisms of action for fundoplication in GERD treatment.

    Main Methods:

    • A prospective study involving 21 patients undergoing fundoplication.
    • Gastric emptying studies using a dual isotope technique before and 6 months after surgery.
    • Assessment of both solid and liquid gastric emptying over 120 minutes.

    Main Results:

    • A statistically significant increase in the rate of liquid gastric emptying was observed post-fundoplication (median 13 min vs. 22 min, p<0.01).
    • A trend towards accelerated solid gastric emptying was noted, with less solid remaining at 100 minutes post-surgery (44% vs. 50%, p<0.01).

    Conclusions:

    • Fundoplication surgery tends to enhance both liquid and solid gastric emptying.
    • Accelerated gastric emptying may represent an additional mechanism contributing to the therapeutic efficacy of fundoplication for GERD.
