A new mobile app, My IBD Buddy, uses gamification to improve self-management for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) patients. The app, developed using the ADDIE model, showed good user satisfaction and usability in a 14-day evaluation.
Area of Science:
- Digital Health
- Gamification in Healthcare
- Instructional Design
Background:
- Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) present a significant global health challenge due to their chronic nature.
- Effective IBD management relies heavily on patient adherence to treatment and self-management strategies.
- Innovative healthcare initiatives are needed to leverage gamification for improved self-management in chronic conditions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a mobile application integrating the ADDIE instructional design model for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) management.
- To incorporate gamification elements based on the Sukr Wheel framework into the application.
- To enhance patient self-management and adherence through a gamified digital tool.
Main Methods:
- The ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model guided the application's development.
- Behavior change strategies from self-management theory were integrated.
- The Sukr Wheel gamification framework was applied to the 'My IBD Buddy' Android application.
Main Results:
- A 14-day evaluation involved 22 participants diagnosed with IBD (ages 20-64).
- System usability was assessed on a 50-100 scale, with an average score of 80.68.
- This score indicates a 'good' level of user satisfaction and usability for the application.
Conclusions:
- The 'My IBD Buddy' mobile application effectively utilizes gamification to support IBD patients.
- The app demonstrated potential in enhancing patient self-efficacy and improving self-management capabilities.
- Gamified mobile health interventions show promise for chronic disease management.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease II: Crohn's Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease, commonly known as IBD, refers to a collection of disorders that lead to persistent inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The two types of IBD are ulcerative colitis, which impacts the colon, and Crohn's disease, which can involve any part of the gastrointestinal segment.

Crohn's disease is a chronic, systemic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that predominantly affects the gastrointestinal tract. It is marked by...
Inflammatory Bowel Disease I: Ulcerative Colitis
Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, encompasses a group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation or ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract.
Risk Factors
The exact cause of IBD remains unclear, although it is believed to be due to a mix of genetic, environmental, microbial, and immune factors. Genetic factors are significant in determining susceptibility to IBD, with family history being a critical risk factor. Individuals with a first-degree relative who has IBD are at...
