A Vision Zero Leadership Team Institute improved confidence in collaborative strategic planning and goal setting for transportation safety. While skills slightly decreased over time, they remained higher than pre-institute levels, supporting a Safe Systems approach.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Transportation Safety
- Systems Engineering
Background:
- Collaboration is key to Vision Zero (VZ) and Safe Systems initiatives.
- Limited guidance exists for structuring VZ collaboration and goal setting.
- A VZ Leadership Team Institute was developed to address this gap.
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe the development and evaluation of a VZ Leadership Team Institute.
- To provide a model for collaborative, systems-aware VZ planning and implementation.
- To support communities in achieving zero transportation deaths and serious injuries.
Main Methods:
- Eight multi-disciplinary teams (n=42) attended the Institute.
- Surveys measured skill confidence (pre, post, 6-month follow-up).
- Coalition collaboration was assessed pre- and 6-months post-Institute.
Main Results:
- Significant increases in confidence for drafting VZ objectives, incorporating equity, and tracking progress.
- Confidence levels decreased at 6 months but remained above pre-Institute levels.
- Improved communication of coalition direction; decreased perception of adequate staffing.
Conclusions:
- The Institute effectively enhanced collaborative VZ planning and implementation skills.
- Support models are crucial for accelerating progress toward a Safe Systems approach.
- Continued development of collaborative frameworks is essential for reducing transportation fatalities.
