    Summary

Compulsive water drinking, or psychogenic polydipsia, can lead to dangerous water intoxication. This condition requires psychiatric evaluation, especially in patients with schizophrenia, as it may involve inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Nephrology
    • Endocrinology

    Background:

    • Compulsive water drinking (psychogenic polydipsia) is linked to various mental health conditions, ranging from neurosis to psychosis.
    • Normal kidney function can excrete large fluid volumes, suggesting water intoxication stems from both pathological and psychiatric factors driving excessive intake.

    Observation:

    • Excessive water consumption poses significant health risks.
    • Patients with polyuria and low urinary specific gravity warrant close monitoring of fluid intake.

    Findings:

    • Four cases of water intoxication due to psychogenic polydipsia are presented.
    • Three of these cases occurred in individuals with chronic schizophrenia.

    Implications:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • Water intoxication necessitates understanding the underlying psychopathology.
    • In chronic schizophrenic patients, inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion may be a component of the psychosis contributing to polydipsia.
