Background:

Limited research exists on the experiences of over 4 million Americans living alone with cognitive impairment or early dementia.
This population often reports higher unmet care needs and fewer financial resources compared to married individuals with similar conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore the successes and barriers encountered by people living alone with cognitive impairment (PLACI).
To inform the development of interventions aimed at improving the quality of life for PLACI.

Main Methods:

Qualitative interviews were conducted with 15 PLACI (median age 69, 87% White, 80% Female).
A modified ideal-type analysis was used to map participants' help-seeking behaviors and thought processes to the transtheoretical model's five stages.

Main Results:

Participants' perspectives highlighted challenges in understanding future care needs and identifying available resources.
The transtheoretical model provided a framework for understanding help-seeking behaviors in this population.

Conclusions:

Interventions should focus on connecting PLACI with community social work services.
Social work support can enhance PLACI's understanding of their needs, facilitate resource identification, and promote proactive aging strategies.
