    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Pharmacology
    • Photobiology

    Background:

    • Carprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) commonly prescribed for pain and inflammation.
    • Photodermatitis encompasses a range of skin reactions triggered by sunlight exposure.

    Observation:

    • Three patients developed photodermatitis after Carprofen administration.
    • The clinical presentation of these cases was consistent with a phototoxic reaction.

    Findings:

    • Spectroscopic analysis of Carprofen showed maximal absorbance within the ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation spectrum.
    • This finding supports a phototoxic mechanism where the drug absorbs UVB, leading to skin damage.

    Implications:

    • Clinicians should be aware of the potential for Carprofen-induced photodermatitis.
    • Patients on Carprofen may need counseling on sun protection, particularly during UVB exposure.
