Federal employee compensation claims provide valuable data on occupational hazards.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze trends in federal workplace injuries and illnesses.
To identify the primary causes of workers' compensation claims in the federal sector.

Main Methods:

Analysis of over 1.5 million federal and Postal Service employee workers' compensation claims from 2007 to 2022.
Linking claims data with employment information for comprehensive analysis.

Main Results:

From 2007-2019, falls, slips, and trips were the leading causes of claims (30.7%), followed by overexertion (24.4%).
From 2020-2022, COVID-19 (exposure to harmful substances/environments) became the leading cause, representing 44.3% of claims.
Other significant causes included unclassified injuries, contact with objects, and violence.

Conclusions:

Workers' compensation data offers a rich resource for agencies to target injury and illness prevention.
The shift in claim types underscores the need for adaptive safety strategies, especially in response to public health crises.
