This study shows a novel smoking cessation program for pregnant Indigenous women was acceptable and effective. It combined traditional Māori knowledge with digital tools, achieving high retention and a 45% quit rate.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Indigenous Health
- Digital Health
Background:
- Maternal smoking poses significant risks to both mother and child, with disproportionately high rates among Indigenous populations.
- Addressing smoking-related inequities is a priority in New Zealand, particularly for pregnant Indigenous women.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the acceptability and potential efficacy of a novel smoking cessation program for pregnant Indigenous women.
- To evaluate a program integrating traditional Indigenous knowledge with modern digital technology.
Main Methods:
- A feasibility study using pre- and post-intervention questionnaires.
- Program delivery adapted to online formats (videos, social media, AR app) due to COVID-19.
- Targeted adult Māori women in their first or second trimester who currently smoked and wished to quit.
Main Results:
- The program demonstrated high acceptability, evidenced by rapid recruitment (>500 responses) and high retention (83% at 16 weeks).
- A significant proportion of participants (45%) reported not smoking by the program's end.
- The program enhanced participants' knowledge of Māori culture, particularly regarding pregnancy and postnatal care.
Conclusions:
- Traditional Indigenous knowledge combined with digital tools (apps, AR) can enhance smoking cessation programs for pregnant Indigenous women.
- Online delivery models are feasible and effective for reaching this population.
- The program shows promise for reducing smoking-related harms and promoting cultural connection.
