We present a method to determine topological numbers in 1D two-band systems by comparing an unknown system to a known one. This technique uses wavefunction overlap to measure winding numbers, aiding topological phase characterization.
Area of Science:
- Condensed Matter Physics
- Quantum Information Science
Background:
- Topological numbers are essential for characterizing topological systems.
- Accurate measurement of topological numbers is vital for advancing topological research.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose a protocol for determining the topological number (winding number) of an unknown 1D two-band topological system.
- To enable measurement by comparing the unknown system with a known topological system.
Main Methods:
- The study considers two 1D two-band topological systems.
- It analyzes the Bloch wavefunction overlap between these systems.
- A theorem relating wavefunction overlap cycles to the difference in topological numbers is verified.
Main Results:
- A theorem is verified, stating that the number of cycles in wavefunction overlap magnitude (0 to 1 and back to 0) equals the absolute difference of topological numbers.
- Two experimental schemes are proposed for cold atom and qubit systems.
Conclusions:
- The proposed protocol offers a convenient and robust method for measuring topological numbers.
- Experimental schemes in cold atoms and qubits facilitate practical determination of unknown topological states through quenching.
