PPE Use in Healthcare Settings I: Donning01:22

PPE Use in Healthcare Settings I: Donning

917
Donning PPE must be completed before contact with the patient. This process protects from infectious agents. The sequence and action included in each donning are critical, and the steps must be systematic to avoid exposure to pathogens. The institutional policy also needs to be followed while donning PPE. The pre-donning preparations are gathering equipment, inspecting the PPE equipment for tears, holes, or damage, removing jewelry, removing any garments below the elbows, and tying the hair...

PPE Use in Healthcare Settings II: Doffing

874
The sequence of removing or doffing PPE starts with the gloves, as they are the most contaminated. Next is removal of the face shield or goggles, as they would interfere with removing other PPE. Then remove the gown, followed by the mask or respirator. Perform hand hygiene between steps if hands become contaminated and immediately after removing all PPE. Generally, the outside front and sleeves of the isolation gown, the goggles or the mask, the respirator, and the face shield are contaminated.

Assessment of Airway, Skin Color, and Use of Accessory Muscles

956
A thorough assessment of respiratory health is paramount in clinical settings to identify and manage respiratory distress and ensure adequate oxygenation. This article elaborates on the critical aspects of respiratory evaluation, including airway assessment, skin color examination, and the observation of accessory muscle use, which are integral to effectively diagnosing and managing patients with respiratory conditions.

Accessory Structures of the Eye

1.4K
Optical perception, or vision, is an extraordinary sense dependent on converting light signals received via the ocular organs. These organs, known as eyes, are securely positioned within the bony cavities of the skull, called orbits. The orbits serve a dual purpose: a protective shield for the ocular globes and a stable attachment point for the soft ocular tissues. The eye's external protective mechanisms include the eyelids, which are edged with lashes that act as a barrier against foreign...

Handwashing II: Pre-procedure and Initial Procedure Steps

890
The pre-procedure steps of handwashing include removing jewelry and rolling up sleeves. However, many organizations allow staff to wear wedding rings.
The hand washing procedure itself includes the following steps. First, cover cuts, if any, on hands with a waterproof dressing. Cuts and abrasions can become contaminated with bacteria hindering the ability to clean the area thoroughly. In addition, repeated hand washing can worsen an injury.  The nails must be short and clean, without nail...

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Public Health
  • Social Science

Background:

  • The COVID-19 pandemic increased interest in skincare, with dermatology hashtags trending on social media.
  • The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) provides facial cleansing recommendations, but adherence is not well-understood.
  • Proper facial cleansing and moisturizing can improve skin hydration and microbiome diversity, benefiting conditions like acne and eczema.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess adherence to AAD facial cleansing recommendations among the general population.
  • To evaluate potential gender-based differences in following these skincare practices.

Main Methods:

  • A 19-question survey was distributed via email and social media to collect data on demographics, cleansing habits, and motivations.
  • Data from 124 participants (91 female, 33 male) were analyzed using SPSS.
  • Statistical analysis identified significant differences in practices and motivations between genders.

Main Results:

  • Statistically significant gender differences were observed in the use of gentle cleansers, post-wash moisturizer, washing after sweating, and water temperature.
  • No significant difference was found in the frequency of face washing between genders.
  • Motivations for skincare, including hygiene, beauty, and health, showed significant gender-based variations.

Conclusions:

  • Female-identifying individuals demonstrated higher adherence to AAD facial skincare recommendations.
  • Self-reported motivations related to hygiene, beauty, and health appear to influence adherence.
  • Further research is needed to explore the factors driving these gender-based differences in skincare practices.
