Maladaptive metacognitive beliefs are linked to all dimensions of multidimensional schizotypy, including positive, negative, and disorganised traits. This research highlights the importance of metacognition in understanding schizophrenia spectrum disorders.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Psychiatry
- Cognitive Science
Background:
- Metacognition, or higher-order thought processes, is crucial in psychological disorders.
- Maladaptive metacognitive beliefs are implicated in various mental health conditions.
- Schizotypy research often overlooks the multidimensional nature of its positive, negative, and disorganised traits.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between maladaptive metacognitive beliefs and multidimensional schizotypy.
- To examine these links across positive, negative, and disorganised schizotypy dimensions.
- To utilize a new, validated measure for assessing schizotypy.
Main Methods:
- A non-clinical sample of 68 Australian university students and community members participated.
- Self-report questionnaires included the Metacognitions Questionnaire-30 and the Multidimensional Schizotypy Scale (MSS).
- The Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale was used to control for response biases.
Main Results:
- Maladaptive metacognitive beliefs showed significant positive correlations with positive schizotypy.
- Correlations were also found between maladaptive metacognitive beliefs and negative schizotypy.
- Positive correlations were observed between maladaptive metacognitive beliefs and disorganised schizotypy.
Conclusions:
- Schizotypy should be conceptualised and studied as a multidimensional construct.
- Findings suggest metacognitive belief modification could be a target for preventing schizophrenia and related disorders.
- This study provides novel insights into the aetiology of schizophrenia spectrum conditions.
