Traumatic chylothorax is a rare complication after surgery. This study presents two cases of chylothorax following gastric resection for malignancy, successfully treated with conservative measures.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Thoracic Surgery
    • Surgical Complications

    Background:

    • Traumatic chylothorax is an uncommon complication of thoracic and cervical surgeries.
    • No prior reports exist of chylothorax following gastric resection for malignancy.

    Observation:

    • Two cases of chylothorax occurred after gastric resection for malignancy due to thoracic duct damage.
    • Both cases were successfully managed using conservative treatments.

    Findings:

    • Conservative management, including pleural aspiration, parenteral nutrition, and positive end-expiratory pressure ventilation, led to complete resolution of chylous effusions.
    • This highlights effective non-surgical approaches for this rare complication.

    Implications:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • These findings suggest that conservative management can be effective for chylothorax post-gastric resection.
    • This approach may help avoid more invasive procedures in managing this rare surgical complication.
