This study identified three distinct neurocognitive subtypes in children with developmental dyslexia (DD). Most children with dyslexia show deficits across multiple domains, supporting current models of DD.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Developmental Psychology
- Educational Psychology
Background:
- Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a common learning disorder.
- Understanding neurocognitive subtypes of DD is crucial for targeted interventions.
- Previous research suggests heterogeneity in DD, but discrete subtypes are not well-defined.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine if children with dyslexia can be classified into distinct neurocognitive subtypes.
- To investigate the domain deficits associated with these subtypes.
- To support contemporary models of multiple neurocognitive deficits in DD.
Main Methods:
- A sample of 101 primary school students diagnosed with dyslexia participated.
- Students underwent comprehensive assessments of phonological, memory, attention, processing speed, motor, visual, and visual-motor skills.
- Cluster analysis was employed to identify distinct subgroups based on performance profiles.
Main Results:
- Cluster analysis revealed three distinct subtypes of developmental dyslexia.
- Subtype 1: Deficits across phonological, memory, attention, processing speed, visual-motor, and visual skills.
- Subtype 2: Deficits primarily in memory, motor, and visual-motor skills.
- Subtype 3: Deficits solely in motor skills.
Conclusions:
- School-aged children with DD can be categorized into subtypes with unique neurocognitive profiles.
- The findings support the existence of multiple neurocognitive deficits in DD.
- Most children with dyslexia exhibit difficulties in more than one domain, highlighting the complexity of the disorder.
