Area of Science:

  • Sleep Medicine
  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted global health and daily routines.
  • Understanding sleep quality and disorders is crucial for overall well-being.
  • Pre-pandemic sleep patterns provide a baseline for assessing post-pandemic changes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate sleep quality, habits, and disorders in the period preceding the official end of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • To identify demographic and behavioral factors associated with poor sleep quality.
  • To analyze changes in sleep patterns and their prevalence.

Main Methods:

  • An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted.
  • An online survey was distributed via a web platform from March 1 to April 15, 2023.
  • Data collected included demographics, sleep quality, and behavioral changes.

Main Results:

  • A total of 2081 responses were analyzed, with a mean age of 37 years; 70.7% were female and 56.5% resided in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area.
  • 68.3% reported poor sleep quality, 44.2% experienced sleep onset difficulties, and 34.9% slept less than six hours.
  • Poor sleep quality was associated with female sex (p=0.00), metropolitan residence (p=0.01), and co-sleeping with pets (p=0.00).

Conclusions:

  • Over half the population reported poor sleep quality, with higher prevalence among women, metropolitan residents, and those sleeping with pets.
  • Specific sleep disorders like insomnia, snoring, nightmares, bruxism, and restless legs syndrome were prevalent.
  • Female sex was linked to a higher prevalence of restless legs syndrome symptoms (p=0.00).
