Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

11.8K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Statistical Methods for Analyzing Epidemiological Data01:25

Statistical Methods for Analyzing Epidemiological Data

294
Epidemiological data primarily involves information on specific populations' occurrence, distribution, and determinants of health and diseases. This data is crucial for understanding disease patterns and impacts, aiding public health decision-making and disease prevention strategies. The analysis of epidemiological data employs various statistical methods to interpret health-related data effectively. Here are some commonly used methods:

Psychological and Sociocultural Causes of Schizophrenia01:29

Psychological and Sociocultural Causes of Schizophrenia

50
Schizophrenia, a complex psychiatric disorder, has been historically misunderstood. Early psychological theories attributed its origins to childhood trauma and unresponsive parenting. However, contemporary research largely rejects these notions, favoring the vulnerability-stress hypothesis. This model proposes that individuals with a genetic predisposition to schizophrenia may develop the disorder following exposure to significant environmental stressors. Notably, studies on high-risk...

Surveys02:16

Surveys

14.7K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Bullying02:04

Bullying

8.4K
A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Other children are selfish and do not want to share toys. One form of negative social interactions among children that has become a national concern is...

Assumptions of Survival Analysis01:15

Assumptions of Survival Analysis

90
Survival models analyze the time until one or more events occur, such as death in biological organisms or failure in mechanical systems. These models are widely used across fields like medicine, biology, engineering, and public health to study time-to-event phenomena. To ensure accurate results, survival analysis relies on key assumptions and careful study design.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Suicide is a critical global public health concern.
  • It is a leading cause of death for young adults aged 15-29.
  • Understanding risk factors for method choice is crucial for prevention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify key risk factors associated with violent and non-violent suicide methods.
  • To analyze demographic and socioeconomic predictors of suicide attempt methods.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study of 18,281 suicide attempters (2019-2023) in Mashhad, Iran.
  • Logistic regression analysis to model risk factors (age, sex, education, marital status, occupation, residence, substance abuse, psychiatric diagnoses).
  • Data analyzed using STATA v.14; statistical significance set at P<0.05.

Main Results:

  • Men, widowed individuals, suburban residents, and unemployed/self-employed persons showed higher rates of violent suicide attempts.
  • Women were 64% less likely to use violent methods compared to men (OR=0.36).
  • Single individuals were 45% more likely to use violent methods than married individuals (OR=1.45).

Conclusions:

  • Factors influencing suicide method choice include sex, marital status, employment, and residence.
  • Men, widowed, suburban, unemployed, and single individuals are more prone to violent methods.
  • Women, elderly, and highly educated individuals showed a preference for non-violent methods.
