Light rays enter the eye through the cornea, a transparent dome-shaped tissue that is the eye's outermost layer. The cornea bends or refracts, light rays traveling to the pupil. Background:

  • Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is a serious ocular condition requiring prompt treatment.
  • Understanding the incidence and risk factors for RRD in specific populations, like military service members, is crucial for preventative strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence, refractive error (RE) association, and distribution of atraumatic RRD.
  • To analyze RRD occurrence in U.S. military service members (SMs).

  • Data from the Military Health System (MHS) M2 database (2017-2022) were analyzed.
  • Incidence rates were calculated and stratified by age, gender, and refractive error.
  • Multivariate Poisson regression assessed the relative risk (RR) of RRD associated with RE.

  • The overall incidence of RRD was 16.3 per 100,000 SMs.
