Approach:

  • A scoping review systematically searched PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and PsycInfo for peer-reviewed interventional studies on Biofield Therapies in humans.
  • Data extraction included study design, population, intervention, comparator, outcomes, and results direction.
  • An online, searchable Evidence Map was developed to visualize the research landscape and identify gaps.

Key Points:

  • 353 studies (255 RCTs) were included, focusing on interventions like Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, and Healing Touch.
  • Common study populations included healthy volunteers, pain management, and cancer patients.
  • Nearly half (172/353) of the studies reported positive results favoring the Biofield Therapy.

Conclusions:

  • Despite growing interest, research challenges and inconsistent reporting limit the understanding of Biofield Therapy efficacy.
  • The developed Evidence Map serves as a tool to navigate the evidence base and guide future research.
  • Overcoming these obstacles can strengthen evidence for adopting Biofield Therapies as integrative care options.
