Summary

Solitary plasmacytomas of the rib are rare chest wall tumors. Surgical treatment offers fewer side effects and should be considered a potentially curative option, not just palliative.

Background:

Solitary plasmacytomas are localized malignant plasma cell tumors without systemic disease.
This study focuses on surgical techniques and outcomes for rare chest wall solitary plasmacytomas.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate surgical techniques and patient outcomes for solitary plasmacytoma of the rib.
To assess the role of surgery in treating this rare chest wall malignancy.

Main Methods:

Retrospective review of six patients with solitary plasmacytoma involving a rib, operated between 2018-2023.
Included preoperative imaging (PET-CT) and surgical interventions for diagnosis and treatment.

Main Results:

Six patients (3 male, median age 55.6) were included.
Two patients died during a median follow-up of 24.1 months, both with preoperative metastasis.
Surgical interventions included biopsy, resection, and reconstruction with mesh for chest wall defects.

Conclusions:

Solitary plasmacytoma of the rib is a rare primary chest wall tumor.
Surgery presents fewer side effects than radiotherapy or chemotherapy for solitary plasmacytoma.
Surgery should be reconsidered as a curative treatment for solitary plasmacytomas of the rib.
