Background:

  • Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) repair outcomes require long-term data.
  • Previous studies lack comprehensive 10-year follow-up on visual acuity and redetachment rates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the 10-year best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), redetachment rate, and lens status after RRD repair.
  • To provide long-term data for guiding patient and surgeon expectations following RRD repair.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of patients from the Scottish Retinal Detachment Study.
  • Inclusion criteria: RRD repair with 10-year follow-up data available.
  • Exclusion criteria: Lack of 10-year data or significant co-morbid ophthalmic disease impacting visual acuity.

Main Results:

  • 103 patients met inclusion criteria; median 10-year BCVA was 0.1 logMAR (6/7.5).
  • Macula-on RRD repair yielded significantly better 10-year BCVA than macula-off (-0.18 logMAR, p < 0.001).
  • 93% of macula-on and 65% of macula-off patients achieved UK driving visual standards; 14% experienced redetachment with poorer outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • Long-term BCVA after RRD repair remains excellent, particularly for macula-on cases.
  • Macula-on RRDs achieve superior long-term visual acuity compared to macula-off RRDs.
  • Redetachment is infrequent but negatively affects long-term visual outcomes.
