Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between major ocular parameters and diseases with mortality.
  • To identify specific eye conditions that may serve as indicators of increased death risk.
  • To analyze these associations in population-based cohorts.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from the Ural Eye and Medical Study (UEMS) and Ural Very Old Study (UVOS).
  • Included 5899 participants (age 40+) in UEMS and 1526 participants (age 85+) in UVOS.
  • Determined cause-specific mortality using regional government data over several years of follow-up.

Main Results:

  • In UEMS, lower visual acuity and higher diabetic retinopathy prevalence were associated with increased mortality.
  • Adjusted analyses revealed associations with factors like age, sex, waist-hip ratio, smoking, cancer, dementia, glucose, HDL, hemoglobin, leucocyte count, COPD, hypertension, and depression.
  • No significant association was found between mortality and age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts, axial length, or intraocular pressure in UEMS.
  • In UVOS, no ophthalmological parameters were significantly associated with death.

Conclusions:

  • Diabetic retinopathy is identified as a significant ophthalmic predictor of increased mortality risk.
  • Vision impairment (low best corrected visual acuity) is also associated with higher death occurrence.
  • Other common eye diseases like glaucoma and cataracts were not found to be significantly linked to mortality in this study.
