    Summary

A rare congenital heart defect, double outlet right ventricle, was diagnosed in a young Brangus heifer. This condition led to severe clinical signs and was confirmed by necropsy findings.

    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Cardiology
    • Congenital Heart Defects
    • Animal Pathology

    Background:

    • Double outlet right ventricle (DORV) is a rare congenital heart anomaly affecting both animals and humans.
    • Early diagnosis and understanding of DORV are crucial for veterinary medicine.

    Observation:

    • A three-day-old Brangus heifer presented with terminal recumbency, dyspnea, and cyanosis.
    • Necropsy revealed an enlarged heart with significant dilatation of the right atrium and right ventricle.

    Findings:

    • The aorta originated from the right ventricle.
    • The left ventricle had a blind ending near the left atrioventricular valve.
    • A thickened left ventricular wall reduced the ventricular lumen.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights the presentation and pathological findings of DORV in cattle.
    • Understanding DORV in livestock is important for breeding programs and animal welfare.
    • Further research into the genetic and environmental factors of congenital heart defects in cattle is warranted.
