Summary

Engaging in moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in the morning is linked to a reduced risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Optimal timing for physical activity may play a role in dementia prevention strategies.

Background:

  • Moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is associated with a reduced risk of dementia.
  • The optimal timing of MVPA for dementia prevention remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between the timing of accelerometer-measured MVPA and the risk of developing dementia.
  • To determine if specific times of day for MVPA are more beneficial for cognitive health.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized accelerometer data from 90,329 UK Biobank participants.
  • Assessed MVPA patterns (morning, afternoon, evening, mixed, inactive) over at least 2 years of follow-up.
  • Employed multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards models to analyze dementia risk.

Main Results:

  • Morning MVPA was associated with a significantly lower risk of all-cause dementia (HR: 0.60) and Alzheimer's disease (HR: 0.44) compared to being inactive.
  • No significant associations were observed between MVPA at other times of day and all-cause dementia risk.
  • MVPA timing did not show a significant relationship with the incidence of vascular dementia.

Conclusions:

  • Morning MVPA is linked to a reduced risk of all-cause dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
  • MVPA timing does not appear to influence vascular dementia risk.
  • Findings suggest that timing-specific physical activity interventions could be a novel strategy for dementia prevention.
