    Summary

    Nasal masses, including adenocarcinomas and polyps, caused inspiratory dyspnea in adult sheep. Surgical removal was successful in four sheep, preventing obstruction recurrence and improving survival.

    Background:

    • Inspiratory dyspnea in sheep can be caused by upper airway obstructions.
    • Nasal masses are a potential, yet underreported, cause of respiratory distress in adult sheep.

    Observation:

    • Fiberoptic examination revealed nasal masses obstructing the airways in 8 of 11 adult sheep with inspiratory dyspnea.
    • Histopathology identified these masses as adenocarcinomas, papillary adenoma, and nasal polyps (glandular hyperplasia with lymphoplasmacytic infiltration).

    Findings:

    • Adenocarcinomas were the most common neoplastic masses identified.
    • Nasal polyps were also a significant finding, with one ewe presenting with both adenocarcinoma and a polyp.
    • Surgical excision was attempted in 6 sheep, with 4 survivors experiencing no recurrence of obstruction for up to 2 years.

    Implications:

    • Surgical intervention can be a viable treatment option for nasal masses causing dyspnea in sheep.
    • Early diagnosis and surgical management may improve long-term outcomes and prevent airway obstruction.
    • Further research into the etiology and prevalence of these nasal conditions in sheep is warranted.
