    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • Recorded 3-minute EKGs from 80 infants at 40 weeks conceptional age.
    • Evaluated four infant groups: premature (with/without complications), term with birth asphyxia, and healthy term infants.

    • Infants with high cardiac vagal tone at 40 weeks consistently showed positive developmental outcomes at 8 and 12 months.

    • Medical complications and other heart rate variability measures did not correlate with developmental outcome.

    Conclusions:

    • Cardiac vagal tone measurement is a promising, noninvasive tool for assessing developmental risk in infants.
    • This method may be particularly valuable for identifying at-risk populations, such as those experiencing birth stress.
