A new eye blinking monitoring system accurately detects blinks and encourages healthier blinking habits for computer users experiencing computer vision syndrome (CVS). The system uses alarms to increase blink rates, potentially preventing dry eye issues.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Human-Computer Interaction
- Biomedical Engineering
Background:
- Prolonged computer use leads to computer vision syndrome (CVS), characterized by eye and vision issues.
- Reduced blinking rates during computer tasks exacerbate dry eye symptoms, a key factor in CVS.
- Affordable, market-available components were utilized to develop a novel solution.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and evaluate an intelligent, standalone eye blinking monitoring system.
- To promote healthier blinking behaviors among computer users.
- To test the hypothesis that the system increases eye blink rates.
Main Methods:
- A camera-based system was developed to track eye blink rates.
- Audible, visual, and tactile alarm modes were integrated to prompt blinks.
- The system's efficacy was evaluated on 20 subjects performing computer tasks.
Main Results:
- The system achieved high blink detection accuracy (95.9%).
- Spontaneous blinking rate was 43.1 ± 14.7 blinks/min.
- Blinking rates significantly decreased during movie watching (25.2 blinks/min) and reading (24.2 blinks/min).
- The alarm function increased blinking rates by 11.9% during movie watching (p=0.09).
Conclusions:
- The developed system accurately detects blinks and can induce blinking via personalized alarms.
- This technology represents a step towards preventing computer vision syndrome.
- Further research is needed to refine the system and assess its clinical impact.
